A Van Morrison  hit back in 1967, arranged here in a moderate Latin style, the saxes take the lead in the beginning, accompanied by brass punches. Later the trombones get into the act, and finally the full ensemble joins in the fun.

 
Chameleon
arr. Victor Lpez - Grade 2.5
Finally, there is a Herbie Hancock piece for the younger band! The melody is first played by alto, tenor, trumpet and trombone, then by the trumpet section. Next up is a flexible open solo section with a solo line written for all the winds, so anyone or everyone can solo! Top note for lead trumpet

This is the classic Led Zeppelin hit adapted and arranged for jazz ensemble. There are a few easy tempo changes in this chart to allow it to conform to the original recording, but the essence is intact.

Paul Baker - Grade 2.5
Paul Baker composed this medium swing chart as a tribute to the great Sammy Nestico. It has a written solo for 2nd trumpet (cued for 1st), a sax section soli, a piano solo, a brief shout chorus and superb writing throughout.

This tenor sax feature pulls from the tradition of great blues tenor players like Stanley Turrentine and Gene Ammons. Scored with instrumentation for 9-17 players, each set

Can You Feel The Beat?
Robert W. Smith - Grade: 3
A high-energy rock chart that cooks, "Can You Feel The Beat?" is a great choice for any performance that demands audience reaction and participation! An infectious groove
with a memorable melody provides the framework to open up solos for the entire band. The drummer gets an
opportunity as well and the solo can be opened up into a battle between two drum sets if desired.

 
Fly Like An Eagle

This rock hit from the Steve Miller Band was popular back in the '70s, but continues to receive airplay even today. Here's a solid chart for young bands filled with energy and drive.
The Fool On the Hill

With a smooth Latin feel, interesting harmonies plus a few mixed meters, this is a terrific feature number for your flugelhorn soloist. Tasty ensemble lines contribute to a creative and appealing change of pace.

good example of an early horn band tune. With a driving

Trombones and saxes lead the way on this Billy Preston favorite from 1973 while the trumpets add the sassy answering figures. With the familiar melodies and funky groove, this is sure to be a hit.

Dreamin' Out Loud
Bob Washut - Grade: 3.5
A very accessible calypso chart that is reminiscent of Sonny Rollinss well known calypso tunes. An introductory chorale gives way to a happy, toe-tapping groove over which a tuneful melody is presented. The basic chord progression will accommodate multiple soloists. Great vehicle for exploring different rhythms and providing variety to a concert or festival program. Outstanding!

 
Flew the Coop
Kris Berg - Grade 3.5
The chicken-theme chart lives on! A rock groove with the melody handled by trombone, tenor and guitar, with written-out solos available for each. Check out the very hip interludes with bass doubling the melody line and bass 'bone and bass playing a unison call-and-response line with the ensemble.
On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever)
 arr. Jack Cooper - Grade 3.5
A mellow bossa feel. Solos are written out for 1st alto sax and 2nd trumpet and the lead trumpet range is to written A, above the staff. Jacks clever use of harmony brings a modern slant to this well-known standard.
Out of the Doghouse
Erik Morales - Grade 3.5
A swing shuffle groove with a hint of gospel, this chart is simply fun to play with a sax soli, some independent bari sax lines and optional (written) solos for alto, tenor and guitar. Lead trumpet range is to written A, above the staff. It also has an optional ending with ead trumpet notes up to C. This is a hot chart.

 
Pick Up the Pieces

The tune is infectious and the arrangement is right on target with no individual solos, but plenty of section and ensemble work. Jarvis - Grade 3.5
Given the widespread popularity of Jeff Jarvis Critical Mass and Honk, youre going to love his latest funk original for advancing groups. A solid funk groove coupled with a rich chord progression gives this driving chart plenty of audience appeal. Solos are offered to alto and tenor saxophone.
Stompin' on a Riff
David Berger - Grade 3.5
As an homage to the great Count Basie, this chart is truly Stompin' on a Riff. Features include a piano intro, a sax section melody and some brass, written solos for
2nd trumpet and 1st alto, a modulation, some piano fills, another modulation and a diminuendo into the shout chorus. This chart swings hard, you'll love it!

 
Summer Never Ends
Liston  - Grade 3.5
When youre lucky enough to find the perfect ballad to feature your star trombonist, its often a highlight of your concert. The compelling melody of this funky ballad offers sufficient space for improvisation and will be a nice departure from the swing ballads normally written for trombone.

John Coltranes jazz standard is arranged by Kris Berg to offer strong ensemble writing, a fierce sax section soli and solo space on the 12-bar blues chord progression. Its flexible
so you can have few or many soloists of all instruments with backgrounds as needed.
I Love You
arr. Chris Sharp - Grade 4
This up-tempo samba on this wonderful Cole Porter standard is a great vehicle for your band not difficult yet very effective. The melody and solo space (written-out solos) feature alto and trumpet and a nice interlude band shout chorus. Lead trumpet range is to written B, above the staff.

 
Invitation
arr. Eric Richards - Grade 4
A high-energy jazz chart set as a samba
with a funky groove and a swing feel. A few features include sax solis, powerful ensemble writing, a jazz solo for 2nd trumpet, and lead trumpet range to written D, above the staff.
Its a challenging chart but worth the work and it will bring down the house. A fabulous jazz tune and an outstanding
chart by a seasoned writer. In short, this is a very hot chart.

 
Midnight Voyage
arr. Alan Baylock - Grade 4
Here is an outstanding tenor sax feature chart that was composed by pianist Joey Calderazzo, recorded by the late, great Michael Brecker. A haunting medium swing groove, tenor sax has the melody and the solo space, and lead trumpet range is to written high C.

The Southeast Six Step
Eric Richards - Grade 4
A creative, challenging and effective original in 6/4 time, with a straight eighth groove that moves into a swing feel, but still in 6. You'll discover that this chart feels great in 6 with features such as a sax soli, solo space for tenor sax and trumpet 2, lots of ensemble shout chorus, and lead trumpet range to written C, above the staff. An excellent chart with a hint of Metheny.

Think of Take the "A" Train with a contemporary flair and you have the idea behind this inventive chart. Opening up in a swing groove, then alternating with a funk feel, bari sax, bass bone, guitar and bass have the initial melodic statement in this terrific chart. Solo space is available for alto sax 1, trombone 1, bari sax and trumpet 2, and the lead trumpet range is to written D, above the staff. A modern yet superb chart of a tune everyone knows. Festival material!

 
Whiplash
arr. Erik Morales - Grade 4
Whiplash is a super-exciting chart in 7/4 composed by Levy and arranged by Erik Morales. Dont be intimidated by the meter, after a few minutes it feels quite natural and the students will totally eat it up. The melody is stated by 2nd trumpet and 1st alto with solo space for both with easy chord changes. Articulation is critical and the rhythm section may want to spend some quality time together. Lead trumpet range is to written D above the staff.
Wrapped Around Your Finger
arr: Mike Tomaro - Grade 4
Originally a pop hit for The Police in the
'80s, Mike Tomaro uses extensive reharmonizations and creative timbral shadings in this marvelous adaptation. The groove is slightly slower than the original but just as effective. Solo space is included for piano and alto sax.
Hit the Ground Running
Gordon Goodwin - Grade 5
Its funky with all the Big Phat Band attributes, and its fairly tough to play, but hey, its Gordon and you know it will be a hot chart if you have the horses. The opening lick for piano is really hot. The rhythm section will stay busy and it includes an auxiliary percussion part. Solo space is for alto, tenor, bari, trumpet and trombone. Open with this chart!

Michael Bubl sang this hit song and now its time for your vocal soloist and jazz ensemble. Vocal range is from F below middle C up to third space C and the vocal part has some easy scat lines with vocal syllables. Lead trumpet range is to written A above the staff. A wonderful chart on a neat tune.
When I Fall in Love
arr. Dave Wolpe - Grade 3.5
Youll love this gorgeous ballad arranged by Dave Wolpe in two keys for flexibility. Vocal ranges: female key (low) of C, from G below middle C to third line B. Male key (high) of E-flat from B-flat below middle C to fourth space D, treble clef. Superb chart.

Jingle Bells

Just what you need for the holiday events,
this swingin chart on a holiday favorite is tasteful and easy to assemble. The melody is stated by 1st tenor sax and 1st trumpet, with written solos for those two horns, a brief sax soli and an open vamp section with a written piano solo and chord changes for all winds if needed.
